FOR THE PRESIDENT
Regarding
the press reports
that our Embassy
in Cairo
has been set afire,
State Department
has just talked to the Ambassador
and he has assured
them that the Embassy
- for an
urgent meeting
of the Security
Council to deal with a massive
Israeli
advance.
The meeting
was set for 10: 00, but the whole morning
was spent in consultation
with Syria pressing
for a cease-fire
and withdrawal
and Western
members
pressing
for a simple
-
had made clear in his press
conference
this morning,
we were
committed
to certain
principles
in this situation
but did not have a program.
He said that he understood
this and; without ip.structions,
he
only say this:
It is important
that the Arabs find
-
great superiority
in maintenance,
leadership,
training
and discipline
rather
than numerical
superiority.
The President
then went on to read a statement
later released
to
the press (attached),
establishing
a Special Committee
of the National
Security
