a paper of major national influence. Certainly, its new
crew, headed by the young Chandler, is genuinely con
cerned about exercising ' leadership to straighten out the
sorry state of affairs politically
- and to know what is being considered
and the extent to which Federal programs are involved. The
Federal Government programs are centered in several depart
ments and I would propose that someone sit in on these meetings
independent of the operating Departments
- of the President 's remarks to the heads of the Executive
Branch of government follows:
"I want to make one thing unmistakably and indelibly clear to every
Department, every Agency, every o ffice a nd every e:npl oyee of the Government of
t he Unit ed Stateso
- ALL YOU CAN TO RE-ASSURE SOUTHERN
NEGROES OF THEIR STATUS AS AMERICAN CITIZENS. THE SELMA AFFAIR
HAS LEFT THEM SHAKEN TO THEBONE . IN MY 30 YEARS OF BEING CLOSE
TO THEM I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A REACTION TO AN EVENT. LESS
ANGER THAN HEARTBRAKE
