architect in Culpeper, Virginia, by the name of Meade Palmer. Carol Fortas became our
treasurer, as I remember. I also remember holding a press conference in my old office
building at Hains Point, the Park Service office building, where we had the model
- didn't know, and I tried to communicate
this to them--to tell them that I didn't know. And this infuriated some of those members
of the Congress. I recall that Congressman [William] Cramer of Florida was a real tiger
about this. He kept pressing me
- Leadership Conference's (SCLC) interaction with the press; communication problems within SCLC; racial tension at Resurrection City; lack of coordination and organizational problems at the demonstration; Ralph Abernathy; the terms of the Resurrection City
- make this arrangement possible.
I suggested
at that time that we form a non-profit corporation, as we have in
the case of other national parks.
I wrote a memo that went to
Mrs. Kennedy from the Associate Director of the Park Service proposing
- say, for the White House Historical Association also
donated $10,000 toward the project.
The cost wasn't very much above
that, maybe another three or four thousand dollars at most, and this
we paid for out of our National Park Service appropriated
- that. There is a
list there. We started calling it the Lady Bird Association, Inc. at the time.
On my own I developed the list of potential board members, drawing on friends
and associates of the beautification program in Washington. Many of the people on the
list came
- day
with a press contingent of about sixty people.
