Thursday. Former Governor Coke Stevenson announces his candidacy for the
U.S. Senate in a New Year’s Day speech broadcast from Austin at 11:45 a.m.
According to the American Statesman (1/2/48), Stevenson “followed his usual
campaign custom
- actions. Truman had seized the steel mills on 4/8. The
Supreme Court ruled that the seizure was unconstitutional on 6/2.

Coke Stevenson declines to run for congressman-at-large as a warm-up for the
1954 Senate race. He still plans to run in 1954
- and political rights for all citizens and a
federal statute punishing mob violence. Stevenson on 2/7 says he does not favor
an amendment to a federal school aid bill denying funds to segregated schools.

In telephone conversation with Mack DeGuerin, Ed Clark mentions that people in
Texas think LBJ is leading candidate in the race for governor now, despite the
fact that Beauford Jester, John Lee Smith and Coke Stevenson may be in the
field.

Coke Stevenson denies rumors he is planning to run
- National Committee. Other
speakers included: Harry Truman, Coke Stevenson, Ed Pauley, Myron Blalock,
W.A. Brooks, Hatton Sumners and LBJ. The dinner climaxed a month-long
fundraising drive for the DNC.

Harry Benge Crozier reports that Coke Stevenson, Jr. is considering running
against LBJ

headed by Coke Stevenson, and of ICE, headed by Ben Jack Cage. Cage, now in
Brazil, has declined to appear before a State Senate investigating committee.

- LBJ’s election is filed with the Senate Committee on Rules
and Administration by backers of Coke Stevenson.
Senators Tom Connally and Francis Myers (D-Pa.) issue statements expressing

Matsu against Chinese Communist attack without the backing

Harriman in honor of Adlai Stevenson, in New York. LBJ then makes a short
speech at the Eastern States Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner. LBJ, Rayburn
- dinner in Washington. Speakers include Truman, Stevenson,
Rayburn, LBJ, Mansfield, and Gov. James T. Blair of Missouri. Democratic
fund-raising activities are increasing while Republicans are backing away from a
controversial $100,000 fund raised
- with JFK, Bundy, Stevenson.
