That's correct.
After the '58 election, which really was one of the
worst debacles in the
history of the Republican party.
Here we had the
White House, and we took a terrific beating in the Congressional
- on national politics.
I was
organization manager for the state of Texas in the Adlai Stevenson
campaign in 1952.
Then in 1953 and 1954, I worked part-time for the
Democratic National Committee under Chairman Stephen A. Mitchell and
Speaker Sam Rayburn
- one of the best nominees
that the Democratic party could have.
I had never heard much about Stevenson.

had never heard him speak.

had been at Chicago at the convention trying to build up a bonfire for

Anti-Poverty Plan and in the incorporation of the budget process
