Yes, sir.
The second trip, in the late summer of
1966. This trip
also included a visit to Denver, where Mrs. Johnson planted a tree
on the campus of Denver University.

Why
did she go back?
C:
I feel because of her
- to go back and see what's happening in
the way of population growth to my home State.
I came to Washington on my third tour of duty in 1961,
as Assistant Superintendent of National Capital Parks.

time we had a quite different organizational

have been living on one of their farms in Virginia.

No attempt to get them back home?
C:
They have never attempted to get them back home. I don't think they could afford to do
it. It would be very expensive
- , I suggested to Mrs. Johnson that she consider
the establishment of her girlhood home in Karnack, Texas, as an historic site. All the
years that I worked with her in Washington there were constant allusions to Karnack and
Caddo Lake and her growing up

On the creation of the LBJ Memorial Grove, you started to tell me a little bit ago about

C:
Okay. The day that the President died, Bette and I were home. I had
- Efforts to establish a historic site at Lady Bird Johnson's childhood home in Karnack, Texas; early planning for the National Wildflower Research Center; the first board of directors for the Center; Carlton Lees' assistance in writing the charter
- months after the last election that Gray had
literally started packing up to return home to Illinois because he did not think he would
be re-elected. And it came as a great surprise to him that he was re-elected. You see, he
injected himself

She has. great know-how in matters relating to horticulture
and landscape architecture.
