Bio: Earle Gilmore Wheeler (1908-1975) was born in Washington, D.C. He received his commission as 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1932, and advanced to the rank of major general in 1955, then to general in 1962. He served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1964 until his retirement from military service in 1970.
