Bio: Robert Joseph Ryan (1914-2003) was a diplomat with the U.S. State Department and United Nations. He was a foreign service officer; Ambassador to Niger from 1964 to 1968; Deputy Assistant Secretary of State from 1968 to 1969; and he became Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations in 1972.
