Bio: Claiborne Pell was born in New York, New York, on November 22, 1918, the son of the diplomat and congressman Herbert C. Pell. As a member of the Democratic Party, Claiborne Pell served as U.S. Senator from Rhode Island for six terms, from 1961-1997. He was also the sponsor of the Pell Grant, which provides financial funding to American college students. Pell died on January 1, 2009 in Newport, Rhode Island.
